Contagions of Nurgle, a Death Guard Preview

For the last of the current previews, Games Workshop reveals the Contagions of Nurgle. Nurgle’s Gift reduces the Toughness of all units within Contagion Range by one. And the Contagion Range grows over the course of a battle.

While the ability does not stack, the loss of a point of Toughness will shift the odds of wounding on most units. For example with bolters, Marines drop to Toughness 3 and the chance of wounding shifts from 4+ to 3+. Poor Tau and Guardsmen drop to Toughness 2 and now are wounded on 2+.

Over the course of the game, the area afflicted by this contagion grows larger. By the time you contesting objectives, there will be multiple overlapping parts of the battlefield affected.

But a grand devotee of Nurgle doesn’t want to wait to share their blessings. You can make use of fast moving Daemon Engines, such as the Foetid Blight-drones and Myphitic Blight-haulers, to bring the Contagions to your enemy.

Alternately, the new Miasmic Malignifier, provides a potent area denial capability right from the start. Setting up anywhere more than 12″ from your enemy’s deployment zone, the Malignifier always counts the Battle Round as 4. With luck and skill, you’ll be able to deny objectives and easy movement routes to your opponent.

Finally, we now know what Mortarion’s Toxic Presence entails. He’s a moving bubble, 9″ in radius, of sickness and death. Combined with his impressive arsenal of Plague Weapons, native 8 Strength, and 12″ movement, Mortarion will be at the forefront of Death Guard forces tearing apart those who refuse Nurgle’s Gift
