A Deeper Delve into Warcry: Catacombs

This weekend marks the fateful return of Warcry with the Warcry – Catacombs starter set. More than a reprint, Warcry: Catacombs travels from the Bloodwind Spoil to the glowing caverns of Varanthax’s Maw with new rules, warbands, and terrain. All this building up the flexible, fast-playing original rules set.

Warcry Catacombs

Catacombs

The Catacombs book adds specific rules for battles underground. Rules range include expanded abilities, universal quests, and dungeon terrain features.

For example, new terrain from Catacombs includes Wall Breaches, Arms Stashes, and Cursed Caskets. In the enclosed environments of the catacombs, Wall Breaches (1) permit extended movement options between unconnected rooms. An Arms Stash (2) increases a model’s attacks as they have a surfeit of weapons. Finally, the Cursed Caskets (3) are dangerous to anyone ending a move or disengage within 1″, a full D6 of danger.

Three additional universal abilities are available to every warband reflecting the hazards and opportunities below. Here’s one provided by Games Workshop.

Three other abilities are locked to specific factions based on their strengths. For instance, the nimble Corvus Cabal gain [Double] Wall Run. When activated, the fighter may move over other fighters as if they could fly, but they have to stay within 1″ of a dungeon wall.

Finally, Catacombs includes four universal Fated Quests, playable by any faction. With the territory rules in effect, warbands will grow in size and may deploy additional Thralls. After a successful Quest, players choose from rewards of Honour or Glory. Honour adds an exalted command trait. Meanwhile, Glory seizes an artefact of power.

New Warbands

Warcry: Catacombs completes the warbands shown in the original rules with the introduction of Khainite Shadowstalkers and Scions of the Flame.

Khainite Shadowstalkers

The Khainite Shadowstalkers form an incredibly skilled and fast striking team of aelven assassins. Each model has access to [Double] Shadow Leap, effectively teleporting short distances through shadows. Additionally, they share the [Triple] Dance of Death. When used, they may disengage and end within one inch of an enemy model. Watch as they nimbly skip past the front line to engage a treasure runner or assassination target.

Scions of the Flame

Facing the Khainite Shadowstalkers in Catacombs stand the Scions of the Flame. A frighteningly effective melee warband, their Blazing Lord and Blazing Champion sport [Double] Beheading Strike which doubles their already deadly 6 critical damage. Meanwhile, their Immolator and Inferno Priest erupt with powerful AOE attacks centered on themselves for area denial.

Further Support

Warcry: Catacombs doesn’t launch in a vacuum. At the same time it releases, there will be four more warbands joining the existing boxed sets. One for each of the Grand Alliances, including Chaos, who already has too many! As well as a 2-pack of double-sided game boards to build multiple unique battlefields.
